In my experience, every culture has their own symbols to interpret what can be divined or 'seen' in a coffee or tea cup. This relates to customs of that particular region/culture. Often, 'understanding' is taken from religion and religious symbolism (fish, cross) and that too is traced back further to pre history, by some interpreters. Others employ psychology  (Jung) and create modern reinterpretations for ancient symbols and interpret their origins. Experience and interpretation comes in many forms to each individual. Often, it is just a light hearted conversation over coffee, meant to be a game to pass the time.
